No woman has been allowed within 500m of this Greek peninsula peppered with Orthodox monasteries since AD1060 when a series of apparitions of the Virgin Mary prompted the Church to dedicate the island to her and declare all earthly females banned. (I dare any woman to swim around the coast, wade ashore, take a few photographs and set a World Record as first female pilgrim!)
