The serpent of Belorado

The indefatigable Denise Pericard-Mea has recently posted an article on a subject I don't think I've ever heard mention of before, tho apparently Don Elias was aware of it. This is a relic of St James in Belorado, namely a snake that he is supposed to have killed to help a pilgrim. Not publicly visible nowadays but can be seen on request to the sacristy.

Anyone come across this curious tale before?
 
The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
How interesting.... so he's Santiago Mataserpiente as well? (excuse Spanish)
