Those interested in the history and art of the Camino might find this book worth a read: The Pilgrimage to Santiago by Edwin Mullins. Published in 1974, it is not about albergues and bedbugs. The author travelled the route from Paris, mostly by car, but the book touches on the other three main French routes as well.
If I had read this before my pilgrimage last year, I probably would have started from Reading rather than Winchester.
