Preface
This essay is not intended to be an academic paper yet, but
rather an indication of the stage of our present research. This
is a very exciting and fascinating journey that we have taken
through time and space some months ago, but we still don't know
when we will reach the end. Today we stop in the first leg of
our trip. Our purpose is to enter the Portico de la Gloria, once
our project is finished, and as good pilgrims sing one more time:

Herru Sanctiagu
Grot Sanctiagu,
E ultreja e sus eja!

The ancient 'Chant of Ultreja' sung at the gates of the
cathedral.
As devotees of Saint James, we hold dearly the belief that
the apostle, St. James the Greater, preached Christianity in our
country, Spain; that after his execution in Jerusalem, his body
was taken to Galicia and buried at a place where now stands the
cathedral of Santiago de Compostela; that in the nineteenth
century Saint James appeared on earth and helped the Spanish
Christian army to win a decisive victory over the other half of
the Spanish inhabitants, the Moors. These basic and deeply held
beliefs had far-reaching consequences in the formation of our
national conscience, whose echoes still are reverberating today.
This is the background that we would like to provide you
with, on which we will start building our intended future
scholarly work.
