FUND-RAISER: Coma lad is walking back to happiness

LITTLE over a year ago, Scott Jansz was lying in a coma with serious head injuries after being knocked to the ground outside a nightclub.
But now, the 20-year-old is planning to walk 500 miles through France and Spain to raise money for charity.

Scott, who lives in Barnstock, Bretton, Peterborough, was in a coma for two weeks, and had to undergo two major operations after his skull was smashed when he was attacked outside the Met Lounge nightclub, in Bridge Street, city centre, in December 2003.

Surgeons had to remove part of his brain and replace part of his skull, leaving him with no sense of smell and recurring headaches.

Scott hopes to raise hundreds of pounds for the Brain Research Trust when he completes the marathon 30-day walk, which follows the traditional route of pilgrims from the town of Roncesvalles, in France, and across the Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela, in northern Spain.

He said: "I used to donate blood, which was my way of giving something back to the community, but I can no longer do that because I've had brain surgery, and so I need to find another way to help others.

"I'm not yet back in work – although I hope to be when I return from the trip – so I can't afford to give much, but this seemed like a good way to raise money.

"One of my friends, Daniel DeArribba, is quite religious and he was talking about the pilgrimage and so I said, 'ok, let's do it'.

"Santiago de Compostela is where the remains of St James, one of the 12 disciples, is buried, and, according to legend, Jesus once walked the route. We're hoping to complete the walk in under 30 days.

"I really enjoy walking and can keep going all day. I think I should be able to do about 20 miles a day.

"I really hope people will come forward and sponsor me."

Scott will be joined by friends Lee Gibson (20), of Chaucer Road, New England, Peterborough, who is raising money for the British Heart Foundation, and his friend Daniel (20), who lives in Huntingdon, and will be walking for Asthma UK.

>>If you would like to sponsor Scott, call him on 0781 3785914.
