I would love to incorporate a futbol game on my camino. Can someone suggest the best locations and will I need to purchase tickets in advance? Starting May 1 and leaving June 26. Thank you

Marc’s list above is a good one which is probably the best starting points but there are others if they don’t work.

There is an app called Futbology which allows you to search matches around you witin a small or large radius, down to a low level. It’s great though there is a small charge. You can download the ‘La Liga’ app which covers games in the top divisions, and for lower down use soccerway. Note that exact days and kick off times may only be set a few weeks out.

I would recommend getting tickets in advance. . Crowds are pretty big . Prices depend on opponents.

Bilbao is a good recommendation. The ground is in the city centre, which means that there is a good ‘build up’ in the bars around the ground from about three hours before kick off. They are at home on the weekends of 12 and 19 May to Osasuna and Seville respectably. Ticket should be gettable through official channels.

The top division ends on the weekend of 26 May and the 2nd division goes on a little longer!

‘Marca’ is the ‘go to’ Spanish daily sports paper and that has a lot of info close to matches. .

The Bilbao team has a policy of only signing Basque players. Maybe not the best strategic policy in terms of creating a winning team, but it certainly endears the team to many Basque fans.

Indeed. They could have been more successful if they hadn’t adopted this policy but yes it endears to their fans!

Actually probably worth saying that there is a team called SD Compostela who play to a high standard in the Spanish Lesgue system.

As this thread gives an excuse to talk football, I'd like to share this article about football culture along the Costa del Morte, Fisterra and Muxia. The football ground in Muxia is actually one of the most beautifully located football grounds that I have ever visited (it is right next to the sea)

Bilbao is on the Camino del Norte, so no bus needed.
But I think we were assuming you are walking the Norte.

If you are walking the Frances instead. In that case, there are different options en routes such as Osasuna Pamplona, Logrones, Burgos CF, CF Leon and SD Ponferradina.

Walking the del Norte starting May 1 so will be past Bilbao and need to return for the game.

Alsa is a great option for getting around Spain.. there are other operators so will depend on route!
