Temperatures Camino Frances

Camino Frances 2016, Sept 2024
We are starting the CF in St Jean DPP in 3 weeks' time. The weather aps forecasts for next 10 days time are showing very high temperatures (well very high for our Irish bodies!) around both St Jean and Pamplona.
What is it actually like there now? Is it do-able if we start early in the morning and hopefully get to stopping points by mid afternoon?

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
I'm in León and it feels hot in the afternoon (siesta time!).
Most people are starting walking at 5.30am, 6am or 6.30am in order to get most of the walk done before it gets hot.
I have been starting at 7am and doing 20km or so per day.
The good thing is that early mornings and evenings are usually cool and there has been a refreshing breeze or even wind almost every day.

My Seattle body has the same problem, and started in SJPP the 2nd week of September last year to beastly temps. But if you start by say 6 you can get in 6 hours of walking by noon, which is grand because the real heat starts to build up after noon.
Remember that Spain is in the "wrong" timezone, so sunrise won't be until 8. Bring a headlamp (one with a red lens so you don't wake your bunkmates).

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Thank you!

Thank you- very helpful suggestion!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Writing this from Villatuerta on the Camino Frances. Mid-afternoon might be a bit too late to stop. It hit 31 degrees c at 12pm yesterday and got hotter from there. I saw someone sick with minor heatstroke at my albergue as she was still out walking at 2.30pm. It's better to get up early eg 5.30-6am and finish walking by 12-1pm. Also, the temperature varies a lot. It was 22 degrees c at 12pm today. I'd suggest checking the forecast then plan accordingly.

Within the next three weeks there will almost certainly be a step change in the weather, I would put money on it. Maybe still warm to very warm but less so than now. Bring a rain jacket. Richard El Flaco

Thank you- that's good to know.
