Steep up hill - downhill like Alto de Perdon?

Time of past OR future Camino
Autumn 2024
I completed my first day of my first Camino from Pamplona to Uterga…

Thank goodness it was dry, but the up and down were really tough for me, fortunately with only one slip/fall on the way down from Alto de Perdon.

I’ve tried looking for elevation maps to judge the next few days, but I’m really confused… are there any “hills” “ridges” or inclines and descents that I should be worried about or prepared for?

It looks like the way up to and down from Villamayor de Monjardin may be tricky?

With limited time off of work I’ll only be walking to Logrono … this time.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

You are not alone in finding the descent from the Alto del Perdon difficult. It is not only the slope, but also the rolly, pebbly surface. There is nothing that difficult between Uterga and Logroño, either up or down.

Join the Camino cleanup. Logroño to Burgos May 2025 & Astorga to OCebreiro in June

The walk down from alto perdon( windmill hill ) is about the max . If you’re past that nothing serious till O’ ceberio and that UP not down

I'd pick the descent from after the Crux de Ferro down through El Acebo, Riego de Ambro and on to Molinasecca as the worst! It is beautiful but steep, goes on for ages, and is rocky. I pick my way down very carefully. There is a road alternative that is much easier but also much longer, and you have to dodge cars. But for the OP it is not relevant.

As Kanga notes, there are some significant and challenging descents between Cruz de Ferro and O Cebreiro, but those are a ways in the future from where the OP is now.

I really appreciate the feedback from everyone as I look to complete my first section on the Camino and plan for my return

Agree. Far tougher than Alto de Perdon.

Having just climbed the steep hill out of Punta La Reina to Mañeru I think I may have misled the OP…. I’d either forgotten or my old body is not in good shape!

Yes, it’s been tough on me… I’m definitely not as strong as my husband … I have stretched and tested myself for sure… we’re in Logrono now scheming for my husband to come back next year alone to actually test himself… I’m too slow for him for sure… it’s been tough and slow but we’ve learned so much from our little caminodita. We can’t do the whole Camino this year but who knows what the future brings.
