Starting point - Vigo or Tui

Hi everyone,

Just looking for some advice whether you think it would be better to start in Vigo or Tui?

We have previously walked Sarria to Santiago in 5 days so hoping to do something similar at the end of June this year.
Both routes look beautiful but which do you think would be better for 5 day walk ( 7 in total). Which route is the most popular? Any major differences that we would need to be aware of?

I would suggest starting from Vigo. The city itself isn't all that interesting but the walk from there to Redondela is quite scenic as it passes through some forested areas offering pretty views of the estuary. Have not done Tui to Redondela but I understand it's less scenic (although Tui itself and Valença across the river are both interesting towns to visit).

I would suggest starting from Vigo. Let me join in with what @kenwilltravel said above and recommend a Vigo start for your Camino. We did stay in the historical old part of Vigo and enjoyed both it and a wonderful dinner of pulpo and pimientos de Padron. Leaving Vigo you get some wonderful views of the river and there’s a great spot near the top of the climb to enjoy your first cup of cafe con leche of the day. As much as I truly enjoyed my visits to Valenca and Tui, I think the first day’s walk out of Vigo was more interesting. Plus, we broke up the very long day from Tui to Redondela with a night in O Porrino which would add on a sixth day to your hiking time. In any case, I know you’ll have a Bom Caminho!

Which route is the most popular?i

Tui /Valença is the most popular, about 9,600 pilgrims so far this year compared to 2,900 from Vigo. If you decide to start on the Central, consider starting in Valença which is just across the river and begins your Portuguese Camino in Portugal.

Just for fun you could start in Valença so that you could walk over the international bridge/border from Portugal to Spain, enjoy Tui and then catch a bus to Vigo.

We did the last 100km of the Portuguese and started in Porrino. Twas a few years ago and the route wasn't too busy and less commercialised that thread of the Frances which we finished last week.

I’ve only walked from Valenca/Tui but can recommend it. Lovely walk across the bridge and both interesting towns. Enjoyed the whole route. I thought it was scenic and the towns were all worth a visit.

Just for fun you could start in Valença so that you could walk over the international bridge/border from Portugal to Spain, enjoy Tui and then catch a bus to Vigo.

You even could take the train . Walk over the famous bridge between Valença and Tui- built by a student of Ferdinand Eiffel- yes him from the Paris Eiffel tower.
Have a look in Tui and return to Valença and take the train from there to Vigo .Look at the website of CP.pt ( Comboios de Portugal, the Portuguese railway company) for the times schedule and prices.
