Sleep Apnoea Machine Use

Time of past OR future Camino
2017
Hi, my first Camino, French way and I will be walking & carrying a Sleep apnoea machine. Travelling early July & August this year. Information from fellow users/ travellers is very welcomed thanks Gail

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
We all love those machines - I find it very soothing to sleep next to someone using one. Rather like gentle white noise. And so much better than snoring and sleep apnoea. So don't be at all concerned, they are becoming quite common. The trick is to advise the hospitalero when you arrive that you need to be close to a power-point. I think you will find everyone quite helpful.

Thanks Kanga, feeling much lighter , although not relishing the extra weight in the pack. Very Much Appreciated.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Another possibility is to get a dental device designed specifically for apnea. Be sure to find a specialist who does this regularly.

If someone has been medically diagnosed with sleep apnoea and prescribed a CPAP machine, then I would not be interfering.

Thank you, specially made Oventus dental device tried and unfortunately of no benefit.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Looked into that a few months ago. They are three times the price of the machine and take 4 months to be fully adjusted. Also, the mouth piece only helps for certain causes of sleep apnea, not all.

Welcome to the Forum, Gail! Just a note to keep in mind - July and August may be pretty crowded, so if you find that it's getting harder to have an albergue bed next to an outlet, try staying in the quieter towns rather than the towns mentioned in the guidebooks. Or you can stay in private hotel, pensión, and hostal rooms so you can be sure to have an outlet. (A hostal is not a youth hostel but usually a more budget-friendly hotel, with private rooms).

Enjoy all the planning and Buen Camino!

I have heard of some people carrying an extension cable for their machine. I have to say the thought of carrying the weight of a cable on top of the machine itself horrifies me. I would like to think that with a forthright statement of your needs and the co-operation of your fellow pilgrims, a cable wouldn't be necessary. If you say to people bluntly 'this machine stops me snoring' I think folks will bustle about to accommodate you. At the worst case, you could pull the mattress off the bed to be nearer to a power outlet.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I have walked both the Portuguese and Francis with trusty cpap. No problems and we did carry a short extension cord which was helpful. Shared the weight with my husband. Enjoy!

Everywhere we went the hospitalerios made sure that my husband had access to an outlet, even if it meant we slept in different dormitories. He carried a little 3x5 card with a printed note explaining that he needed the machine for medical reasons and people were very kind about it at every location. He always showed the card when we checked in so there was not a lot of switching around of beds later. We did stay at many smaller places, but even at some of the less modern facilities he was always able to use his machine.

Gail,
I carried a CPAP machine for sleep apnea last summer. No problems as long as I let the hospitalero know when checking in. Fellow Pilgrims were very accommodating when learning that I needed access to the power point/outlet.

Enjoy your Camino!

Thank you Phil,

Your information is very appreciated. Gail

I found this on another thread on this forum and plan to print it out and take with me when I start in September.

Below is a note that can be used to communicate that you use a CPAP and need access to outlet:

Senor <my name> sufre de Apnea y requiere la ayuda de un aparato
respiratorio para dormir. Esto significa que <Sr. xxx> necesita acceso a
una toma electrica durante la noche. La cantidad de electricidad usada es
minima, pero es esencial para su confort y salud. El enchufe debe estar en
un radio de 12 metros de donde duerme el <Sr. xxx>. Muchas gracias por su
ayuda.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
