What a weird stance by the mayor. I wonder what his reasoning is for disallowing the flechas

I think the reason is in 1997 was the PSG candidate for the Xunta and clearly lost. He can't forget.
I did a fact check. You are correct, he is a human being and subject to various frailties, weaknesses, and inclination toward darkness. Thank goodness as for a minute or two I thought he might be an alien.

Maybe he was walking from Lisbon on his first camino and followed the blue arrows instead and ended up in Fatima and couldn't figure out how he got to Santiago so fast and that he could have sworn the Cathedral was bigger.

When I was in Vigo, this past April, the flechas are few and far between, but there are there and when you cannot find them, it is time to use your Camino app of choice, mine was Buen Camino which steered me in the right direction.

To the point made in this thread, I spent a whole day crisscrossing the city in search of a place it would provide me with another credencial and to my surprise I was told not once but several times, Vigo is not part of the Camino culture. I was left crushed but obtained my credencial, got my stamp and five days later I arrived in Santiago.

According to comments to the article there must be fourteen " mojones" in Vigo city. But Vigo municipality is bigger than the "city". I think there must be a lack of yellow marks everywhere. The mayor should do that work because he doesn't let the Xunta do it.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
Very confusing to me. I wasn't sure what signaling or flechas were and the article is in Spanish. I have no idea what a PSG candidate is. And 14 mojonos? Then someone said they were putting the lights up?????
But I looked up flechas (striped marks) so I figured signaling had to do with signage (markings/yellow arrows) and apparently the mayor was against it. At least that is the best I can figure out. I still don't understand what the light had to do with the flechas/? Arrows. I hope other people understood this thread more than I did.

PSG= Partido Socialista Galego is the political party of the mayor who is famous in Spain for the Christmas lights. So the lights had nothing to do with the flechas. It was just a joke.
More: The mayor Abel Caballero had to compete with Manuel Fraga in 1997 for the Xunta when he clearly lost and Manuel Fraga was the " creator" of the Camino de Santiago in 1993.

It’s a real pity because Vigo is a great city to experience. Just last night for example the pilgrims at the municipal Albergue were treated to a fiesta of dancing and bonfires right outside their balcony window.

It is definitely not a city to skip just because of the mayor. Use an app to view the best ways in, through, and out of town and enjoy.

Do you prefer uptown or downtown? I want to give Vigo a second chance! But I am always baffled by cities ON the water that don't seem to be oriented TOWARDS the water. Having first heard about Vigo from the poems of Martin Codax, I was disappointed in its industrial and fairly ugly waterfront.

It comes down to knowing the many small neighborhoods that gave birth to Vigo. Bouzas down by the waterfront is a place that pilgrims following the coastal path will cross. The barrio around the Co-Cathedral, Alameda park (and parts uphill from it), and the neighborhood around Plaza de La Constitución are all nice and lively.

If you are near the Municipal Albergue in the neighborhood known as Berbés you need only follow the path uphill.

The issues with pilgrims poor view of Vigo is because of the arrows, and the injustice they do to seeing the best parts. Vigo is not alone in this respect (I’m looking at you Sahagún) but it is the most extreme version.

It is also a 45 minute boat ride to the Cies Islands (a national park), which are worth the visit even on foul weather days. This can be hard to plan because you need to do so a few weeks in advance but if anybody is interested in how it is done I can write up some instructions.

Ah, the waymarking is to blame - now I get it. Thank you. (Yes, the entrance to Sahagun was the most soul-suckingly ugly stretch I have ever walked.)

My wife and I used the Wise Pilgrim app to navigate out of the city last May. That said, I found sufficient painted yellow arrows and stickers to get out of the city while using the app for reassurance. And the locals were helpful too.

It also helps to follow that pilgrim who looks like he knows where he's going

There is a long article today in La Voz de Galicia about the agreement reached between mayor Abel Caballero and president of Xunta Alfonso Rueda on the resolution of different works in Vigo. About the Camino signalling, the mayor said that they are in the process to contract a " new modern system" based on " big screens". The mayor also said that he wanted the pilgrims to visit and stay in Vigo.

Neither of them will make good in their word, unfortunately. If so there would be no need to contract anything. There are two official departments and a few associations that could get the job done in a weekend if they wanted to.

Rueda meanwhile is ignoring pleas to protect a number of other Camino zones that are being threatened by massive development projects and others which are actively being destroyed.

This is very sad. Would a petition from Santiago put any weight in their decision against this development?
