Shout out for O Pillaban in A Rua

Since Asun’s house is no longer available for pilgrims, the alternatives are the polideportivo or a private place. An albergue is in the works.

Above the restaurant O Pillaban, there is a five (or so) room Hostal. I did not eat a full meal in the restaurant, but the salad and sandwich he made me were great (sandwich mostly wrapped in tin foil for dinner). I have read lots of rave reviews of the restaurant.

I had called about four days ago about a room and sort of got a brush-off. So last night I tried again. Yes, an habitación individual is available for 20 €. Great bargain. It is right on the camino, in fact it’s in front of the church that is in front of Asun’s house. It is a short walk downhill to the center of town, no more than three or four minutes.

Very nice mother and son team trying to make it. I think the hotel part is languishing but the restaurant doing well.

I suggested that it would be easier to have a mobile phone for WhatsApp because talking on a land line can be hard. So she gave me a mobile number. 627 89 10 04.

Highly recommended.

I was wondering about Asún. Is there a reason why she is no longer taking in pilgrims? I enjoyed my stay with her four years ago (yes, it was that long ago that we walked the Camí Sant Jaume, Aragonés and part of the a Invierno together Laurie).

Ultreia my dear peregrina!

I have asked in the ayuntamiento and also the people here in the hotel (who live a stone’s throw away).

No one knows (or will say) anything.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
I remember someone posted couple of months ago that the reason was her health (severe hips problems) after I thought it was the care for her mother Manuela. Which should be like 90 or even more by now. I was there in 2014 and she insisted to hang my stuff to dry. She assumed that as a man I don't know how to do it, hahaha. Such a sweet and funny lady :)

Just opened this thread, shocked/saddened to hear that something might have happened to Asun and/or Señora Arias which means the albergue is no longer open.
Laurie, if you call in at all at Casa Solana, do please give best wishes from us grateful forum members who have stayed there.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

I went by their place several times yesterday. No sign of life, and the neighbor I asked (in addition to at the Ayuntamiento and in the hostal) knew nothing. Strange and sad.

The explanation is quite simple Asun's mother is very old now and with ill health. Asun has to look after her and can't be in two places at once. Her Albergue now only serves as an information point. This is explained in her website : http://caminodeinvierno.es/.
By the way the English version of her Guide on the Winter Way will be published within a month. I'll be helping her to sell it ! I'm sure it will be a great seller. I'll post an update
