Salvador as an alternative to the Frances

A selection of Camino Jewellery
Dear Joe, you menioned
Salvador route from Leon. I am walking from Leon starting March 11 and would prefer a solitude route instead of the main traffic. Do you have some information on that route? Thank you! Love, Meera
Hola!

If you're interested in Camino del Salvador take a look in this forum section:

or:

http://caminodesantiago.consumer.es/los-caminos-de-santiago/de-san-salvador/
http://todosloscaminosdesantiago.com/caminos/camino-delsalvador/

But Camino del Salvador goes from Leon north to Oviedo and not to Santiago. If you want to make that loop to Santiago then you should turn SW from Oviedo on Camino Primitivo.

One more less walked route is Camino de Invierno which runs from Ponferrada to Santiago but south of the Camino Frances. A lot of info here:

ElizaMetere:

The links provided by KinkyOne below are good resources. March 11th is an early start for the Salvador so make sure you check the weather. I walked the first week in April 2013. I encountered quite a few large frozen snow drifts. I have posted several pictures on the Salvador thread. There are also many other good threads there. If you have not read them, I would recommend you do so.

The Salvador is a 4 to 6 days walk and then you pick up the Primitivo in Oviedo, another 11-14 days to Santiago from there. The Primitivo will also be sparsely traveled but you should have some companionship. I did not see another Pilgrim on my Salvador.

The Frances should not be crowded at all at this time of year. Leaving from Leon, you could reach Santiago by Easter.

Feel free to PM me if you have any additional questions.

Joe
