Santa Catherina is a monastery located a particularly beautiful position in the Sinai desert on the job since the 5th century. Saint Catherine , of the wheel, was eventually beheaded and the Greeks believe her remains were brought here by angels. Historically it was a secretive place far far from civilization, entry gained by means of baskets drawn up by the monks. When I last visited, c-1980, there was a gate! There is a large library with the grounds containing rare and unique manuscripts. Today there is a small village/town nearby including a hotel and swimming pool but the living quarter monastery and its library were closed to visitors. The library is now open for visitors who can read the Greek and Syriac. More relevant for the vast majority of us, withIn the church there is a representation of the Transfiguration of Jesus where are depicted Moses to the left, Paul to the right with Elijah, Peter as foundation and below left…Saint James between Peter and Moses! We just missed Saint Catherine's feast day, but perhaps next year!
