Route de Cares from Oviedo

I’m planning to start the Primitivo in October from Oviedo but am trying to put together a side trek first to the Route de Cares. It’s a local trail along the gorge of the river Cares . Ten miles across and 10 back. Very dramatic with tunnels and bridges. But even though it’s only 60 miles east of Oviedo it’s hard to get to. A local ALSA bus has 79 stops to get to the start.

I was there in 1994 and what I remember is that it was a continuous stream of people — I can’t imagine what it is like 30 years later! Really, there was no point at which I didn’t feel like I was in a line of people, but maybe that was because it was a weekend in high season — I just don’t remember.

My experience in 2020 was about the same as Laurie, it was quite busy. We drove there and parked at one end so walked up and back. Many go with two cars so don't have to return the same way.

It was a nice stroll, even took my dog with us walking, nothing difficult.

I can't remember if it was on the weekend but was surprised how many were walking. The restaurants (on both ends) were also hoping.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
