Returning to SJPP from Santiago by bus

I do have a query which someone may be able assist me with. My husband & I intend to return to St Jean Pied-de-Port from Santiago, initially by bus. The bus that leaves Santiago at 8.30am is scheduled to arrive at Irun at 22.24 - which means we would need to get o'night accommodation at Irun before going on to Bayonne. Would it be a better solution therefore, for us to travel to San Sebastian and stay o'night there before getting the El Topo to Bayonne the next day and then either a hire car or train to SJPP? Can anyone offer comment on this as a suggested return journey please.
Thank you
Margaret

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
The train is another option. There is a daily train departing Santiago at 9am, arriving at Hendaye around 8.30pm. it will still be too late to get to Bayonne, but better than arriving after 10pm. Stay overnight Hendaye and go on to Bayonne and SJPP by local train in the morning.

I could be wrong, but I think El Topo does not go to Bayonne but terminates at Hendaye.
