Just short of Ages yesterday after a great walk we came upon an unfortunate scene, where an older Spanish gentleman had taken his own life shortly before by hanging. It was incredibly upsetting and my wife and I and others alerted other walkers as to the situation so they could steel themselves as they passed.

It took about 30 minutes for the authorities to arrive, along with a neighbor who was sent out to look for the gentleman.

It is sad. It is real. As you walk, never underestimate the simple power of your presence among others ... especially those of this great land who are hosting us peregrinos.
Be grateful for every step; treasure life. This unfortunate soul was someone's much loved friend.

Into God's arms of mercy.

That is sad. The poor soul. Goodness knows what brought him to that Jim. Life demands a lot of us and more for some than others. You can understand that sometimes it simply demands too much. How right you are; it pays to remember that we are guests, privileged guests in most cases, and we walk through towns and villages where such freedom as ours barely exists. Humbly, quietly and gently must we go by those farms and dwellings where the lights shine dimly at dusk.
May the poor man’s soul rest in peace.
