Reading suggestions for the Camino

Dear all

I am not sure if my 2 cents are worth it. I didnot have time to read during the walk or at the hostals. I was busy soaking the scenery and i wanted to travel light and not be weighed down with books. All we had was couple of pages we downloaded from the net about the path and interesting places to visit.

For those so inclined, I am currently making my way through The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan.

The book was originally published in 1678 and became the second most widely read religious book of the day, second only to the Bible.

It is an allegory of the Christian life told through the journey of a pilgrim to the Promised Land. Several of the scenes where the pilgrim undegoes hardship and meets people along the way will resonate with readers.

My edition from Paraclete Press is replete with footnotes that cite to the Scriptural references made in the book, and is a great help.

While Bunyan's Puritain spirituality is not in complete harmony with my Catholic tradition, there is much to learn from him and I recommend it highly.

I've just posted another article with some suggestions on Books for the Camino. Not guidebooks (as there are already enough lists online for that kind of material) but tips for novels and books of wisdom and inspiration that you could take with you to read on the Camino.

Feel free to add your suggestions or to let me know of any other reading lists that might be available.

Hi John M,
I think you'll have to open your blog to the general public as I was closed out. I was interested in the books. I myself wrote a book which features my family's first trip on the Camino Frances. It is called The BIG Trip. It's a memoir about taking a year off the school/work rat-race with 3 teenagers, and practicing "slow travel", living simply, and experiencing life as a local.
