Time of past OR future Camino
May 2025
Hello Folks,
Planning my camino this coming May. I would like to merge from the littoral to central from Vila do Conde to Rates.
How can I navigate the way? Is there an app/map I could use?
Are there any recommended accommodations in Rates near the trail?
Many thanks!

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
The Wise Pilgrim app shows the routes between Vila do Conde and Rates. It's also on the mapy.cz app.
Yep, we used mapy.cz in July 2024. It was also the first time we sent our bags ahead with Top Santiago, which we chose to do because of the amount of roadside walking on this portion of our Camino.

Good place to stay in Rates is Casa Anabela. Good room and decent breakfast.
You can navigate using Buen Camino though I believe that route takes you through some wet patches.
I used Google Maps with directions for pedestrians. Walk along roads all though with a couple of cafes for breaks en route

Join the Camino cleanup. Logroño to Burgos May 2025 or Astorga to OCebreiro in June
To minimize road walking, another option is a bike path near the Pavoa de Varzim metro station that brings you to Arcos.

I walked this way in Sept 2024 and can second using the Mapy.cz app and Stingy Nomads website. Great resources. I used the Mapy app my entire walk. The walk to Rates starts with a lot of road walking but the benefit is getting to experience Barcelos and especially Ponte de Lima.

Holoholo automatically captures your footpaths, places, photos, and journals.

Walked this in 2019 and there were enough arrows that I found my way. I didn't use an app and only had to ask for directions once - it was a nice way to connect with some very nice locals who were heading to church. I didn't see any pilgrims until Rates.

I used Wise Pilgrim app earlier this year. Stayed at Casa Anabela which
I can recommend. It is right on the Camino. There was an albergue just up the road if that suits your budget better.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
More praise for Casa Anabela! She served an amazing breakfast and offers beautiful private rooms with super comfy beds. Note, however, that it is not a low-cost option.

She asked us to tell future pilgrims to contact her directly for reservations. It works out better price-wise for pilgrims (as compared to Booking.com) phone: 351 919578642. Her English is great.

We walked this route last year - go up to the Santa Clara Monastry in Vila do Conde- you can't miss it - and follow the aquaduct - you will pick up the yellow arrows along the way. Bom Caminho
