This just in...

My return to the Portuguese (picking up from where I left off last year) resumes in just over a week.

I've been doing a lot of planning the last month or so (only some of it in my head), and I just remembered...only a fraction of what will happen can actually be planned for!

And that's where the fun (amidst all due trepidation) happens

Michelle, I was saved by the use of sandals whereever that was possible. By using woolly socks I kept pebbles (mostly) out. My feet got air and my toes were not cramped in. Roman soldiers walked all ovr Europe with sandals.

Also now Bruno is telling me I should use my mountain boots. The difference is, he has bad blisters, I have none!

Take care of those feet. You still got many kilometers to go!

Hi. I'll be picking up from Vigo, Spain, which is on the coastal route. By June 6th, I'll be back home trying not to be envious of your presence on the Camino

Would love to hear how you get on. Our intention was to go the coastal route but I am starting to have doubts. It seems the Central Route is more populated therefore has more alburgues. I would be interested to hear your experience.

Hi. I'll report back if I can, as the coastal merges with the central in Rednondela, which is about 20km from where I'll be resuming the walk in Vigo. As I understand it, though, the last 100km of all paths tends to be much more crowded, so what I experience might not be representative of the part of the central from Porto to Tui. For my part, on the coastal last year, I experienced what I thought was a perfect balance of solitude (especially when walking) and community. My concern about this time out is that there might be too many people for my tastes on this last leg, but if so, then it's a chance for me to adjust and grow. Also, as I understand it, for those who care for some quietude, after Santiago, they continue on to Finisterre and/or Muxia, which is something I'll likely be doing myself.

To the extent I have advice worth giving, I'd say embrace the things that don't go according to plan, and know that in between the highlights, there's a lot of what could be mistaken for banal.
