In 1971 Philip Larkin, one of England's grumpier poets, wrote to a friend of his "I have a theory that “holidays” evolved from the medieval pilgrimage, and are essentially a kin of penance for being so happy and comfortable in one’s daily life. "

O dear. One wonders what would have happened if he had ever booked an all-inclusive holidy in one of those luxury resorts.

Ah, poor old Larkin. It was what his mum & dad did that gave him his vision and his voice.

You can forgive anything of the writer of "An Arundel Tomb" (actually in Chichester cathedral) for its final line alone: "What will survive of us is love."

Actually, the habit of "going abroad" on holiday probably originates from the 18c Grand Tours rather than medieval pilgrimages - or the Crusades.
