Hi
I know there are lots of threads on this subject.
I can't seem to answer a question about time of year.
How can I transfer from Pamplona to Saint Jean Pied De Port at the beginning of March 2017?
Thanks
Rodney

Hi @Rodney Saul ,

This is from the thread: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...na.23395/ Pamplona to Saint Jean Pied de Port

CONDA (a subsidiary of ALSA) provides ~seasonal~ bus service from Pamplona to Saint Jean Pied de Port. The SJPdP bus stop is located near the junction of Route d'Uhart and Route d'Arneguy. Trip time is one hour 45 minutes. The bus then returns from SJPdP to Pamplona. The CONDA site advises that you purchase the ticket from Pamplona to SJPdP separately from any other bus ticket.

The bus from Pamplona to SJPdP ran daily 1000 13 June to 31 August 2014, 1430 1 June to 30 Sept 2014, and 1730 17 March to 30 September 2014. The schedule for the 1430 bus was extended first to 3 Nov 2014 and again to 7 Dec 2014.

The CONDA bus service usually starts just prior to Easter and terminates some weeks before winter solstice. Schedules are not usually updated more than one month in advance.

Links checked August 2016.

So, at the beginning of March you will probably need the Conda service. Just be aware that until the end of March you cannot travel from St-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Roncesvalles via the Route Napoleon because the route is closed. You will have to walk the road via Valcarlos.

Thanks Kanga
Hopefully we can get a bus at that time of year.
I had a feeling that the Napoleon route might still be closed.
What is the other route like?

Rodney, it is lovely. A walk through pretty Basque countryside, an interesting village on the boarder that used to be the haunt of smugglers and is still much visited by the French looking for Spanish produce (Arneguy), and then Valcarlos which has an excellent albergue and a great restaurant. Then a pretty path (with lots of climbing - it is taxing) through beech forests until you are right up at the top of the pass. It's the more authentic route, because it was taken by most pilgrims in medieval times. But I did it in May, in early March you are likely to get fog, snow, rain and mist - so for safety's sake you will probably be confined to the road, rather than the walking track.

The Route Napoleon does not open until the 1st April.

Go to https:/www.alsa.es/en/ and click in the "Point of departure" type-in box. A pop-up allows you to pick a "Departure country" of "Spain." Then in the "Point of departure" box start typing "Pamplona" (without the quotes). As you type the name the pop-up starts showing fewer and fewer names until you can either finish typing or click on one of the names shown in the pop-up. Next do something similar in the "Destination" type-in box and pick "France" in the pop-up. Go back to the "Destination" type-in box and (this is the secret) type in the name "Saint Jean de Pied de Port" (without the quotes). If you abbreviate "Saint" as "St" or "St." then Alsa won't find the town.

And someone once asked "Would you know if the bus depot in Pamplona is close to the train station?"

Dear Rick

I'm from South Africa and hope to start from SJPDP on 10/11 April 2017.

But my goodness to get any proper and updated information of how to get to SJPDP from Roncesvalles by bus is almost impossible!! I mastered Spanish long ago and have been in contact with ALSA and Conda. They are not to helpful and will honestly only tell you , "there is no service ."

For the life of me I tried to follow your instructions on how to use SALSA's website, It does not pick up SJPDP. It keeps on giving Saint Etienne !! its is a most user unfriendly website !

It must be a busy route during April to September , but the information of hour to get from Spain to the start at SJPDP is very evasive.

I know one can take a taxi, if its me alone, I cannot afford it. I cannot start with an expense of EURO 60 on the first day !!

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Can you explain again to me please

It keeps on giving Saint Etienne !!
ALSA probably has not posted the schedule for next year, so there is no Saint Jean Pied de Port yet. Typically, they start in May or just before Easter, so April can be a problem. There is service all year to Roncesvalles six days per week. From there you can take a taxi. Corazon Puro is an excellent alternative, but they may not open in April. Check their website.

Buen camino.

Dear Gerhard,

Another option would be to simply travel to Pamplona and then see whether there's a bus going or not. Just go to the bus station, have a look at the time tables and/or ask at the counters.

If there's no bus that day or the next, you can just start your camino from Pamplona. No problem at all, and no need to worry.

I do understand the urge to plan. Sometimes it's good to remember that not everything has to be planned beforehand, though.

Anyway,
Buen Camino!

Sorry Gerhard. My post was a copy from one I posted earlier in the year. It worked then but I tried it just now and it did not work. I am sure the reason is the one Falcon269 gave. Keep on trying every few weeks or so. It was possible to buy your ticket online, not just find the schedule.

I do see a schedule at http://www.conda.es/eventos.php?tipo=3&id=438 (in Spanish) but I'm not sure how up-to-date this page is (although it does give a copyright date of "Martes 27 de Diciembre de 2016" at the bottom of the page I think it really refers to when the page gets served rather than when the content data was updated.)

The page shows that from March 1 through November 2 there is a bus departure from Pamplona to Saint Jean de Pied de Port listed at 14:30 and from April 1 through November 2 there is another departure at 17:30. Later in the year there are departures at 10:00 and 12:00.
* 10:00 (1/6 - 30/9)
* 12:00 (20/6 - 5/9)
* 14:30 (1/3 - 2/11)
* 17:30 (1/4 - 2/11)

Elsewhere on the web I see that the ticket costs about 22 €.

More information I've taken from a previous post:

For Pamplona if you go to http://www.infotuc.es/index.php/es/ (in Spanish but usable) you can see the bus route from the RENFE train station to the bus station to get you to St. Jean. That is route L9 (line/linea 9). In the box labeled "HORARIOS Y SERVICIOS" pick the circle numbered "9" or in the box labeled "TIEMPO REAL" chose the drop-down item "RENFE - UNIVERSIDAD PÚBLICA DE NAVARRA". In either case you should see a map of the city and the bus route you want. The RENFE station is at the far left/west and you see the route travels just north of a large park, La Ciudadela. Zoom in on the map and you can see a building located at the east end of the park (within the park) marked with a bus symbol. That is where you get the bus to St. Jean. The road that the station fronts, Calle Yanguas y Miranda, is between two line 9 stops.

The Pamplona street bus page at http://www.infotuc.es/index.php/es/destinos-frecuentes/category/accesos-ciudad-2 will show you where the airport and bus and train stations are located and what street bus routes to take to each. Use the "open/abrir" arrow on the right to get the map.

The bus station appears to be small but that is just the part above ground. Enter there to get to the bigger underground part.

I agree that the Corazon Pura transfer could save you some headaches. We stayed with Barbara and Istavan after Roncesvalles. Lovely quiet place. They are gracious hospitalerios and former pilgrims. You can email them. They both speak excellent English. We enjoyed a lovely sunny May afternoon sitting with them on the front porch steps sipping a cold beer discussing the local politics.

Just an FYI, I recently wrote Corazon Puro and found out they are "on holidays" until February. I plan to book there for April 2 and shuttle to SJPP, but CP said wait until February (no date specified) to get back to them on booking.

We only emailed a day or two in advance of our arrival. I don't think you need to be too worried about booking far ahead. I would just contact them again when they return.

I was going to take the bus but met 3 other pilgrims on the train so we shared a taxi. 100 euros divided by 4

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
The schedule for Pamplona to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port is always difficult to find - neither the ALSA nor Conda websites show anything although closer to the season they may. I can see the problem for the OP who is travelling at the beginning of March. At that time of year I'd be starting in Roncesvalles.

@Rodney Saul if you really want to start in SJPDP perhaps you can catch the bus to Roncesvalles and see if there are any other pilgrims there who are prepared to share a taxi across. Or contact Caroline at Express Bourricot and who may be running a service and can help (the bag transport service that ferries people and backpacks between SJPDP and Roncesvalles).

Just an FYI, I recently wrote Corazon Puro and found out they are "on holidays" until February. I plan to book there for April 2 and shuttle to SJPP, but CP said wait until February (no date specified) to get back to them on booking.

Same here, I've contacted Corazon Puro as I'll be arriving in Pamplona on 30th March. They've confirmed that they're available to pick me up from Pamplona and that I need to contact them again in February. From what I've heard and from the feedback I read, Curazon Puro must be a very good option.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I've stayed at Corazon Puro and had them take me to SJPdP as well. It's very nice and worry free. It also gave me a chance to recover from jet lag.
The ValCarlos route is lovely.

I am considering asking Corazon Puro to hold a few items for me for two days; that is, items I need at the end of my Camino that I want to mail to Ivar once I pass back through Pamplona once I start the Camino. I initially arrive in Pamplona (Corazon Puro) from Madrid on a Sunday, and assume the post office will be closed and that I couldn't mail things then. In addition, I want to get a couple of days under my belt and see what other items I can shed from my backpack and Santiago. Any thoughts or counsel on that approach?

That sounds doable, but I'd definitely send them an email asking about it when they are back at work for the Camino season. They are a really cool couple. I'm sure they will help you anyway they can.
As far as shedding items from your backpack? Do it before you leave for the Camino. No use hauling around anything you don't need. Leave out anything that you put in the "what if" or "just in case" category. Trust me, you have stuff on your list you don't need. Take it from someone who has "donated" several items along the Way.

Thanks. I understand "weight" as I am an avid backpacker and have learned the hard way. Main items are "end of Camino" travel needs.

Pamplona to SJPdP when CONDA is not operating a bus as follows:

a. ALSA bus from Pamplona to San Sebastian; or

Renfe train from Pamplona to Irun/Hendaye

b. Renfe Cercanias train from San Sebastian to Irun; or

PESA (to Place de Basques) or ALSA (to TGV (Gare) Bayonne) bus from Donostia/San Sebastian; or

(note new bus station in San Sebastian is co-located with Renfe station)

Metro Donostialdea (Euskotren) from Amara station to Hendaia station.

c. Metro Donostialdea from Irun Colon (across the bridge over tracks just north of Irun Renfe Station) to Hendaia (co-located with Gare d'Hendaye)

d. SNCF train from Hendaye to Gare Bayonne; or

Transports64 bus 816 from Gare d'Hendaye (some start at Renfe Irun) to Place de Basques.

e. SNCF train from Gare Bayonne to SJPdP , 4 x daily all year.

There is no schedule from Pamplona to SJPdP at this time. Bus companies typically do not post schedules for new service more than 30 days in advance. CONDA (owned by ALSA) is the service provider. ALSA is one of the few bus companies in Spain that will sell you a ticket more than 30 days in advance.

Autocares Artieda is the service provider from Pamplona bus station to Roncesvalles. So the CONDA bus will not drop off passengers in Roncesvalles though it will pick up passengers going to SJPdP ... because the companies are operating routes under license.

Here is Pamplona bus station information:

Try taking a plane from Madrid to Biarritz. Then Chronoplus bus 14 from Anglet airport to Gare Bayonne and SNCF train from Bayonne to SJPdP.

I can't comment on Istvan's service picking you up. My wife and I stayed at Corazon Puro in 2016. What a wonderful experience. Istvan and Barbara are pilgrims as well as wonderful hosts.

So just a note about mailing things...There did not seem to be a post office (Correos) in Bizkarette in case you are mailing something big you don't want to carry on to Pamplona although there may be a Correos in Zubiri? Also Corazon Puro does not really open until noon so you may need to time things so you can pick things up on your way through in case Istavan and Barbara are out on errands, taxi detail, etc. in the morning. You can discuss this ahead of time with them as Mark Lee suggests.

To give you some idea of Istavan's sense of humor. I was on my way out the door to walk down to the store to get a few items. Istavan said "You'll need a hammer." I asked why and he said "Well they closed for siesta a little bit ago so if you want in you will need to break the lock." We all got a good laugh and sat down to enjoy a cold beer together instead.

I did exactly that in 2015. Left some stuff with Istvan and Barbara before he drove me to StPdP. When I came through on foot, I decided that there was some stuff that I didn't need. My pack was already about 13kg. Istvan was kind enough to offer to post this stuff ahead for me as I left him on foot bound for Pamplona. He posted it on to Ivar in Santiago, where I picked it up about 35 days later. He posted it from Pamplona, and I has given him say 20 euro for this. By the time I walked thru Pamplona, I called in to see his friend in a shop called "Caminoteca" in Pam. There was a few euro in change for me and a receipt. I cannot speak any more highly about the friendship and assistance offered by Istvan, Barbara, the Caminoteca guy in PAM and Ivar in Santiago...as I was a nervous first time walker pilgrim on my own. This willingness to help made a great difference to me at that time.

Hi Peter do you remember how much did it cost for Istvan to drive you to Sjdp. Cheers Tony

while this is not preferable, there is always the option of taking a cab over to SJPDP

The rates that I heard quoted were about 60-80euros.

Perhaps you can find someone to split the fare with you

The idea of going first to the bus station and checking schedules makes a lot of sense. Should that not work then you can walk outside and negotiate with the cab drivers

buen camino

Hello everyone. To go back to the original question, I just tried ALSA's website, and it looks like the Pamplona - Saint-Jean route will begin this year on March 1st. If you try to reserve a ticket for that date, it will let you, but if you try for earlier dates, it will tell you that no buses are available.

Hi Tony, I cannot remember, I think it was included in my night's stay, he had 2 pilgrims to deliver, if there was a charge it was very reasonable.
