We are starting from SJPdP on July 4 which puts us in Pamplona in the middle of the San Fermin festival. I recall a vary large municipal Albergue in Pamplona. Is that still there? Will they be accepting pilgrims during San Fermin? Does anyone have a strategy for getting a municipal bed in Pamplona?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

AFAIK the municipal is closed during the San Fermines. Try Casa Paderborn, better call ahead and reserve, if possible.

If you want to get away from the festival and I am sure madness as no city knows how to party quite as well as Pamplona. (I think they have a festival when the wind changes direction;))You could walk through to Cizur Menor. It is about 5k past Pamplona. But it would be fun to experience a party in Pamplona! Take my word for it!

I walked a week prior to the San Fermines and the city was packed with tourists. Especially Brits and from the US. And most of the setup for the bulls and TV occupying the streets of the old-town. As I walked by the ring with the stables you can hear the bulls shouting.

It was a experience of it's own. Some of the shops were closed and boarded up, some were prepared as I strolled through the old-town.
The Hospitalero of the Casa Paderborn gave me a tip to go out for dinner that was quite amazing.

Hope you have fun walking through Pamplona.

I have walked through Pamplona and it is just about the most fun you can have legally anywhere:). My next camino will start on the Aragones so I will miss Pamplona. Don't know how long I will stay on the CF after I get there. More importantly you get yourself back to Camino walking shape so you can be healthy and well to walk many more caminos over many, many years.

This thread can address the issue of finding accommodation in Pamplona during the San Fermin festival, but please do not make any commentary on bull fighting, running of the bulls, etc. See Rule 2 here.
