Planning my next go - from Vezelay this time around - struggling with the different guide books all in French which I do not speak but can, with a great effort, read. I have come accross an interesting side-note in one of my books, the shell, one the classic scallop Pecten maximus found in the Atlantic Ocean thus
and "our" shell found only in rhe Mediterranean and since important for the story of Saint James thus
Why is the differnce so important? Santiago de Compostela offers much for the pilgrim, the final stop of one's pilgrimage, the Compostela document, the mass, the Cathedral and Portico de Gloria, good fellowship and wonderful places to sample the seafood for which Galacia is also famous. I was always reluctent to sample the scallops, really-something akin to canabalism perhaps, but now I have discovered that those offered in the restaurants of Santiago are a different species altogether. Now the question-where?!? My favorites include: "San Clemente" on rua San Clemente, "Fornos" rua Horreo on the square and around the corner or in a pinch "Los Sobrinos del Padre Le Casa del Buen Pulpo" Praza Cervantes. Guilt free pleasure but have a deep pocket ready.
