Some of us have little choice but to use Ryanair.
For all they add on optional extras the fare is still reasonable, and no other airline flies UK to SdC at the moment.(or no affordable airline...)
Who needs checked baggage anyway? Anyone walking the camino needs to get their pack down to well within carry on size/weight.( see my earlier posts on pack weights etc)
And in my experience, Ryanair is a lot more lenient regarding carry on bags than, for instance, Easyjet. :mrgreen:

I have never encountered such crass commercialism in any other airline. One gets the impression that their entire operation is designed to get you to part with your money at every turn.

Full service airlines don't deliver much service anymore. Ryanair unbundles the charges so that you pay for only what you want. If you plan using the list of charges, you can save a lot of money on Ryanair. Nothing Ryanair charges is a hidden fee. They are very open about what costs what. If you are careless or casual, they will pick your wallet at every turn. Know what you want, and don't change your mind. I wanted to leave Santiago a day earlier. Iberia wanted an additional $1,400 for the change. At that moment, I would have loved a 100 pound charge!

I agree with Sojourner and Falcon on this one. With Ryanair it's " what you see is what you get ". They are unbeatable for short trips in Europe ( a bonus for me is that they fly into smaller airports in Spain ). I would love to always travel the slow way and use TGV from Begium over France to Spain but that is not always doable due to time restrictions. And TGV can cost double as much as Ryanairticket.

You are right, of course in that respect. I agree that the fees charged by Ryanair are lined up on the buffet and you chose and pay for what you want (over and above the bare bones flight cost), while on the other hand, they are normally bundled into the overall fair on other airlines, and it is likely that Ryanair is cheaper in the end.
That being said, the sprint on the tarmac is hideous, restrictions on credit cards are ridiculous. Also offensive is the photo of the semi-naked woman on the intro ad (Red-Hot Fares and Crew!) I just really don't ever patronize companies with the look and feel of this site and of these services.The whole thing is tacky. I'm not elitist, I just don't deal with companies that employ these tactics.

I flew Easyjet Luton - Madrid and return in Sept.
I only had a small pack so no problems, and no checks at Luton.
However, returning from Madrid, at the boarding gate lots of bags were checked, and several deemed oversize (despite the owners frantically donning extra clothing!), with consequent surcharges demanded for checked baggage. So I would make sure your pack is within the limit.
As stated in another post, I found Ryanair - for all their faults - a lot more lenient regarding cabin bags - no-one was pulled up for oversize carryons. :mrgreen:
