Norte Weather

Time of past OR future Camino
Camino de Santiago, Norte (2016)
Camino Portuguese, Coastal (2018)
My two companions and I will be walking the North route (starting in Irun) from mid September to mid/late October. Can someone advise us on what weather to expect and what clothes or outerwear we should pack. Thank you!

Well there's good news and bad news - the bad news is that the only reliable forecast will be available just before you leave and would cover say the following two weeks - the good news is that Merino wool clothes will be suitable for a great variety of possible temperatures - the first part could be very warm (sun cream, sleeping bag liner but rain jacket), the second part could be colder (fleece and sleeping bag) - also depends on how each of you copes with the cold

I know its the wrong time of year but this is the weather I got last week on the camino del norte from Bayonne to Bilbao.

Saturday 26/03 From Bidart in France to Hondarribia 26 degrees warm and sunny - no real humidity
Sunday 27/03 From Irun to San Sebastian 22 degrees warm and sunny - no humidity
Monday 28/03 From San Sebastian to Getaria - 15 -18 degrees - overcast with the odd sunny spell - no humidity
Tuesday 29/03 From Getaria to Deba - 13 -16 degrees - started off wet in the morning turned into sunny afternoon - no humidity
Wednesday 30/03 From Deba to the monastery in Zenarruza - Sunny and cool in the morning 13 degrees - sunny and warm 20 degrees in the afternoon (This would have been a very difficult stage in the searing summer heat)
Thursday 31/03 From The Monastery in Zenaruzza to Gernika - Very wet - Rained all day - heavy shower of Hail stones as we reached Gernika - temps around 12 degrees
Friday Gernika to Bilbao - Sunny and cool in the morning 13 degrees - sunny and warm 20 degrees in the afternoon (This would have been a very difficult stage in the searing summer heat)

Moral of the story - you have to be prepared for all sorts!!

Spursfan and Niali,

Thank you both for your advice. I guess layering will be the way to go and of course, packing rain gear. We had hoped not to bother with sleeping bags but will reconsider. Thanks again.
