An el Mundo report suggests that pilgrims are being ‘tolled’ to make up for a deficit in tourism in Galicia.
“The Budget Act of the Xunta de Galicia decreed that from January 1, 2008, one of the 14 works of mercy, giving shelter to pilgrims, would now cost three euros a day.”
In May Galicia recorded the third worst hotel occupancy in Spain. The Minister of Economy of the Xunta, Jose Ramon Fernandez, acknowledged in Parliament that economic growth in Galicia had lost "dynamism".
The president of the Association of Hotels and restaurants in Santiago, Jose Antonio Liñares, estimated a loss of 7% in June and was concerned about the slow pace of reservations August .
The agency justified the implementation of tariffs on the need to decongest the more than 200 el Camino de Santiago shelters in its passage through Galicia. But the truth is that the dismal market situation has caused, for the first time, Spain to evangelize their spiritual direction towards pilgrims with greater purchasing power. A recent report reveals that the average expenditure of pilgrims is 26 euros a day.
