This Spanish article describes/ illustrates the recent completion of a type of "open heart surgery" on wooden work within the cathedral.

The restoration of the canopy above the statue of Santiago took only two weeks. The deterioration of the wood was due to water leaking , xylophages which are insects that eat wood, and, the quality of the wood used originally .

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
The beautiful oak pews with the lovely patina of age were taken out during the restoration. When I was there in 2019, there were chairs in place. A local person who I had a chat with in the cathedral said that she thought the pews were being restored and would be returned. Wondering if that's the case.
