New albergue proposal for Montefurado

A selection of Camino Jewellery
This would be terrific! Montefurado is a little hamlet right on the river, with a few year round residents but no services, except for a sporadically functioning centro social.

It would probably result in a decrease in nights spent in A Rúa, because it would create the possibility of a 22 km day from Barco to Montefurado. I suppose one downside would be that people would have to bring in food (barring other changes), but I know that for many the A Rúa to Quiroga stage has been a real challenge, with some using the daily train to go out and back to cut the stage.

The association that has made the proposal is the one founded and led for years by Aida Menéndez, who died last year. It is good to see that the association is carrying on. They have proposed the use of some church buildings that are not being used, so let’s see if anyone responds positively to this proposal. As the article notes, this will not happen overnight!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

There is a wonderful little homemade donativo out of a gentle hospitable woman’s basement at street level right on the Camino at address San Miguel de Montefurado 46. Long table, makes you coffee, drinks, she brought out enough bread and chorizo for a small army and we had to fight her to leave some money. She offers the use of a spotless bathroom available in the same space. Her name is Manoli. Another gem on the .

An albergue in Montefurado would delight Casimiro. But the time frame makes it very unlikely that he will live to see it. I would hope that those who build this albergue recognize him and his tremendous camino spirit and love.
Would that they name it after him and that he may be there for its inauguration.

It would be a strategic location on the Invierno. After a short walk, we checked into the Hotel Niza in A Rua and had time to walk to Montefurado and catch the train back. We then took the train back again next morning to walk to Quiroga. If there had been an albergue, we'd have stayed in Montefurado. But it's a very quiet, near-abandoned spot, once a flourishing village. On the way up the hill, you can admire the artwork of the sometimes resident American artist in Alvaredos.

Early risers will pass this artwork in the dark and have a special experience: many of the boars, moths and strange creatures are phosphorescent and light up with a flashlight. For example two enormous eyes staring at you from the trees behind a bend... In the silent, total darkness of the mountains, it looks surreal.
