New Albergue in Mieres

I just heard from a friend in Oviedo that a university dorm in Mieres is opening up rooms to pilgrims on the Salvador.

The local press reports that this is a temporary solution while the city gets busy on their own pilgrim albergue in the center of town.

This is very good news, because the reports on the existing albergue, which is out of town a bit, have been variable.

reservations required.

I opted to stay in a Hostal in Mieres because the albergue was on the edge of town leaving Mieres, and according to Gronze or whatever source I was using it didn't open until 3 pm or so, or I'd have to chase down the key somehow. Plus I really liked Mieres, and wanted to stay in the center.

I’ve walked the Salvador several times now and only once stayed in Mieres, and I agree with you. On my earlier walks, I just crossed the bridge and went straight through town with only a short stop for a coffee, maybe a stamp, etc. My impression was that it was a pretty unappealing place. But a few years ago, I decided to mix up my stages a bit. Like you I got a hostal in town and I found it was really a lively friendly place with a lot of good food options.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Here is a link to an article about the temporary albergue that I was able to find. I couldn't find an address number to locate the "Residencia Universitaria" on the map, but the article shows you a photo of the place, so you know what to look for. It is at the intersection of the Calle Vega de Arriba and the Calle Gonzalo Gutiérrez Quirós, at the traffic circle. You can see it clearly on the street view on Google maps. Plus, the article says you MUST call and make a reservation if you desire to stay there.

Unfortunately, this isn't in the center of town either, but on the south end. Fortunately it is only steps from the Camino, across the river.

When I stayed in Mieres, I was surprised to find the municipal albergue not in Mieres at all, but in Rozadas de la Peña, quite an additional way north of town. And I found the albergue to be simple and clean, not unpleasant at all. I guess I was lucky.

Hi, @Elle Bieling,

I think that the state of the albergue varied a lot with the hospitaleros over the years. At one point it was vandalized — here is @jpflavin’s response to a question I asked in 2016.

The Albergue in Mieres is on the Oviedo side of town. It is pretty dreary and I would not be comfortable with my wife staying there alone. The place had broken windows and was pretty much in disrepair. That said, it did have hot showers. I was lucky to catch the guy who has the key when I stopped. The center of town is another km or 2 back.

I wonder if they will close this albergue once the in-town albergue is up and running.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

According to Gronze the old albergue is closed for good.

Desde el 15 de julio de 2021 —y hasta que se habilite un nuevo albergue— los peregrinos puede hospedarse en la Residencia de Estudiantes de Barredo. El albergue de peregrinos del barrio de La Peña ha cerrado definitivamente.

If you do a google search on Albergue de Peregrinos de Mieres, google also states the albergue is permanently closed. The Residencia Universitaria costs 16 euros/per person, so if you are a couple, you might as well stay in the center of town. The rooms are all single rooms with its own bathroom, so not exactly an albergue.

Last September on our camino Salvador we slept in Mieres in the University Inn. This "hostel" is on the 1st floor of the building and it are ip student rooms. Bed + shower, toilet, towels, sheets. There is a large kitchen on the floor and a restaurant downstairs.
The building is located outside the center and close to the busstation where you can also have breakfast in the morning. It's more like a motel.

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).

Goot to have first hand reports on this temporary fix in Mieres. Hoping there will soon be news that the purpose-built albergue is ready for peregrinos. My guess is that there will be a push to have it ready for next year’s extended Holy Year.
