it was on my Netflix list, and tonight i finally got to watch it. Well made docu on a group hiking in the backcountry in the Sierra Nevada mountains / CA (starting in Yosemite) -
Quite different than a camino pilgrimage - (and not only because of the terrain and those 42 - 75 pound backpacks) and yet there were many shared sentiments/experiences. GORGEOUS images of a truly stunning landscape. Quite enjoyed the film - you might as well .

This thread got me thinking about films on the themes if walking and wandering. Personally, I found "The Way" to be little more than an entertaining bit if Hollywood fluff, a travel brochure for the Camino.

Off the top of my head, here are three films on the topic that I really liked. Feel free to add to the list.

Nicholas Roeg's 1971 masterpiece "Walkabout" left a very lasting, powerful impression on me when I saw it as a kid in the 70s. As a Canadian it had an added exotic element that completely captivated me. It remains on my "greatest films of all time" list.

Gus van Sant's "Gerry" (2002), about two friends who go for a walk in the desert and get lost, is great survival story and a very realistic cautionary tale for those of us who love to explore off the beaten path. It's a great "what would you do in this situation" story.

Sean Penn's "Into the Wild" (2007) is a fantastic adaptation of Jon Krakauer's even better book. Less about walking, more about wandering and the search for life's meaning, this true story is a beautiful tragedy that hits universal themes. There's a little bit of Christopher McCandless in all of us.

and .... you mentioned the books films are based on. I remembered books that always included wanderings (but are not made into films, that i know of) and those books are by Hermann Hesse (German Nobel prize winner) - Was terribly fond of his writings and always moved and interested in his characters and tales - many of them were 'wanderers'. As i recall, someone mentioned the book "Narziss und Goldmund" in a recent thread. And reading his stories must have evoked much of the longing/interest of just shouldering a pack and start walking and continue ... -

There is at least one film adaptation of Hesse's classic book, but I wasn't overly impressed by it when I saw it many years ago. The film was made in 1972, directed by Conrad Rooks. The book is much better, in my humble view.

I think there are many more books than films on the topic of wandering, hiking, walking, but that's another thread, perhaps.

This one is getting pretty good reviews. I read the book, but found it very disappointing. I hope the film is a lot better than the book.

"Wild" (2014) -- American biographical drama film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée and a screenplay by Nick Hornby, based on the memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail written by Cheryl Strayed. The film stars Reese Witherspoon.

not yet . have managed to miss numerous screenings here in the Bay Area. Saw the trailers - and it's intriguing enough for meriting a full-viewing. I might have to wait for the DVD release on netflix ..

I'm hoping to see it when it comes to Salt Lake City but the date has changed by two weeks since I last checked.

I saw the film in our town theater about six months ago. It is a much more honest representation of the Camino than the other film by Martin Sheen. The DVD is being released in early November. They have an office in Paris and I am going to call them in the morning to see of they are going to have a PAL version. I will also mention the ordering on line from out of the country problem to them. We are talking about it on another thread right now too. (I happen to be on vacation in Paris but still checking the forum daily)

I loved this film! Very inspiring and very interesting group of people.

Excellent movie.! Made me consider taking that trek next. Watched in a movie theater with my hiking meetup group.

Just had a reply from them and they say it maybe late November for the Dvd, and yes they have got my details to email me and arrange a payment and posting.

Here is the response that I just received from their office in Paris:

"Hi Dennis,

Thank you so much for calling! So as I understand - We are selling our DVD
starting November 20th. It will be available only in American format at the
moment, not PAL. We hope to have a PAL version sometime next year, not sure of
exact date, but after we have a cinematic release in Europe. The film will also
be available for STREAMING on November 20th as well.

Maggie & Adam- Dennis just happened to be in Paris, so that is why he called me
here. There is much excitement about the film on “CaminoForum” at the moment.
But people are unsure if they should order if they are from overseas. Dennis is
going to go on the Camino Forum and post what I wrote above, but I suggest that
perhaps we go onine at the Forum and post an “official” statement about
purchasing the product if you are overseas.
