Health inspectors checked over 40 camino shelters and concluded that most are hygenic.
Three shelters have been excluded from the network of Tourism for deficiencies in the facility.
The inspectors reviewed the conditions of hygiene, preservation, water supply and pest control.
Javier Aldaz, head of the Food Safety and Environmental Health, Public Health Institute, said yesterday that inspections have been conducted in 40 shelters in Navarra Camino de Santiago on the list offered by the Tourism department, except those of Pamplona City Council to be competitive.
The visits were conducted by five inspectors in the months of March and controlled aspects of the situation of sanitation, maintenance of premises, equipment and furniture, the conditions of supply of drinking water and hot water and pest control programs, especially bedbugs.
According Aldaz, there are shelters that are "rehabilitated old buildings and sometimes there are difficulties in their adaptation for the Holidays." It is not always easy, he stressed, because there are many different hostels belonging to different institutions, from city councils to nonprofit institutions, private entities, etc. Hence, the amount payable on housing is also diverse.
The Department of Tourism has an official list of these units can be found on its website. After inspection of Health, which are part of the Interdepartmental Plan Camino de Santiago 2008-2012 prepared by the Government of Navarra, has spent a report impaired health tourism in three cases. Health officials have not provided that hosts are those with deficiencies while noting that "has left the official offer of the Department of Tourism."
Aldaz stated that Tourism has opened administrative proceedings to allow time for those responsible for the shelters in order to overcome deficiencies. "There are on offer but once the facilities are right back to the list without problems. This is not work as a shelter or as a place to stay," he said.
35 restaurants were inspected offering specially priced menus for pilgrims. In this case, we have controlled the food safety requirements as well as food storage procedures and training staff handles them. The inspection result has been that, in general, conditions are "right."
Aranguren said that this year we have developed a specific plan to mark the Jacobean holy year 2010. The reason is that the number of pilgrims is usually double. Proof of this is that throughout 2009 there were 52 389 pilgrims from Roncesvalles while in May 2010 alone have been 9208.
From the point of view of health, explained that the health centers and clinics in the area serving the pilgrims, especially blistering problems, digestive disorders and stings. In addition, Health in the shelters also distributes health information on prevention of pests, manning kits, prevention of legionellosis, etc. In this regard, he noted that a working group of the communities of Camino has coordinated actions to work, especially in pest control. And, in particular, Navarre was in charge of drawing up the protocol in case of pests in shelters.
