Personally l prefer airports to say where there are rather than celebrate divisive politicians, from Chiang Kai Shek, JFK, CDG or whoever. However, if they really want to change Madrid's airport's name, l am less irritated by it honouring Suárez than almost anybody else except Cervantes or Velásquez. It is easy to forget quite how skilfully he negotiated the post-Franco years, leaving us the (largely) liberal, tolerant, democratic Spain that we all love, and how easily it could have gone horribly wrong.

I posted the link in English but I have now found the official bulletin from the The Spanish Government. It would seem the news is a bit more complicated. There is no dated fixed as to when this will happen, plus the name of the airport will be Adolfo Suárez, Madrid- Barajas. Maybe the use of Barajas will be used all of the time and no real change will occur?

Indeed! That site is of two minds when it comes to the order of the old and new names. I wonder if, despite the new name will the airport designation still be MAD?

It'a a perfect way to split a 35 km mountain stage between San Martin de Valdeiglesias and San Bartalome. People who have stayed there say there is a very nice pilgrim-friendly hotel or two. I would have been quite happy doing that, but I didn't want to lose my two French companions, so I forged ahead. (and you also get to visit the Toros de Guisando on the way out of San Martin, which are also pretty amazing! -- just in case you are still trying to decide on a camino for this year, Alan) Buen camino, Laurie

Thanks Laurie, great to hear that his legacy is celebrated - and another good reason to firm up my choice of the Levante for this year's camino. The Ebro will just have to wait its turn ...
