A new device, coordinated by the Emergency Agency of Navarra, was used to locate a pilgrim who got lost while walking to Roncesvalles from St Jean Pied de Port.
The woman, a middle-aged Italian, started in the morning from St. Jean Pied de Port to make the first stage of the way but lost her way on the mountain.
About seven that evening she called 112 for help and from SOS Navarra was organized an operation in which volunteer firefighters took part from Valcarlos. She was discovered in Dantxagune in good condition at about 10pm that night.

One of the early books I read on the camino was Jack Hitt's "Off the Road" - a wonderful account from this journalist who met up with a wild assortment of characters and ended up herding/ dragging a donkey along for a few days!
He gives a vivid description of his first day out of St Jean. As he climbed, nothing seemed as it should, even the rivers were'nt flowing the right way. But, at last he came to the first village - only to discover that he walked in a full circle back to St Jean!!
There are now emergency call facilities on the mountain up to the Col Leopard - using the 112 call centre.
