Looking for help with revisions on Lisbon-Porto guide

I'm working on updates to the online CSJ guide on the Lisbon-Porto section of the Caminho Portugues. I wrote the guide in 2009, have had updates periodically (the CSJ posts a few revision pages also), and am now in the process of rewriting the guide to reflect all the many changes.

I haven't walked this section since 2009, so I really could use help from others who have walked it recently. If you would be willing to take a look at the revisions I have, let me know and I can send you a word attachment of the revised draft.

I know there are several forum members who have walked from Lisbon recently, and if you have some time, this would be a big help! Thanks, Laurie

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
Laurie. Can you send me a pm and I'll send you my email address so you can send me your word file for a look over.
Best regards from this side of the world.

Train for your next Camino on California's Santa Catalina Island March 16-19
Hi Laurie,

I'm due to start from Santarem this Tuesday! Unfortunately because of time contraints I'm catching the train from Lisbon to Santarem, but will give you updates from there to Porto for sure and anything I can offer on Lisbon itself. Can you please PM me and I'll send you my email address, I'm walking with my Dad so you'll get two perspectives :)

Just got here, Laurie. Your CSJ guide input was part of my reading material while waiting at the Orly Airport today (while I waited for my flight to Lisbon). I´m halfway to buying a can of yellow spray paint tomorrow to take along the trail--put down some really good markers for the ones you said weren´t all that visible! I´ll get back to you when I can!

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Thanks, Heather. I just got a PM from Kat, who has made it to Coimbra from Santarem and says all is good. I really appreciate how you are so willing to help with the guide, and I'm sure it will be much improved from your contributions. Enjoy Lisbon, it is a wonderful city.

If you happen to check in before you leave Lisbon, and if you want a good introduction to the city on foot tomorrow, I put together this walking tour:

Bom caminho, Heather, from Laurie

Hi Heather! I'm in Mealhada at the moment heading to Agueda tonight, so far so good - the way marking seems to have vastly improved in a lot of areas but there are still a few spots you may need to stop and look hard or use Laurie's invaluable notes. In particular take care in the newly burnt out forest after Golega. After you cross over the A23 highway and turn left, as per the guide and arrows do not take your first right up the hill take the second instead. It seems the way markers there were burnt as is the stone arrow now very scorched! Laurie's notes helped us through this bit a lot :)

We've also noticed that arrows are not always where you'd expect them eg. Not at an intersection but sometimes meters down the correct road so look carefully but this hasn't been a major issue.

Have a wonderful walk I think you'll love this Way we're having a ball!

Bom Caminho,
Kat

Shout out to Kat and Heather and anyone else who has recently walked from Lisbon -- I'd love to finish a revised guide for both Lisbon to Porto and Porto to Santiago, so any and all suggestions are most welcome. Thanks!

Hola, walked the internal .last year, the Coastal, this September; "jgtwort@yahoo.co.uk" will help if I can.

Hi Laurie! Dad and I got back last week so we're just consolodating our notes and will have them to you asap :)

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I just want to say that I was really bowled over by Kat's (and dad) extensive comments. They are phenomenal and will really help to improve the CSJ online guide. I will have a new version soon, but if anyone is walking in the next few months, PM me and I will send you what I have. I don't want to go all mushy here, but this forum is really an amazing place. Thank you so very much Kat and papa. Buen camino, Laurie

Hi Laurie and Kat!
Back since Tuesday (it's now Saturday) and finally (I think!) over the jetlag. I'll go through my notes too, Laurie and will send you what I can. From the sounds of your comment above, Kat will have had far more info than I will...I got behind in my journal writing and tended after a while to write: rain...again. Or sunny, hot, flies...again. And other such pith! But I'll see what I have and will send you a note asap! :)

I wish I had of looked on the forum and gotten your note, Kat! Sheila and Sebastian got lost in the eucalyptus woods (that you mention) and walked the highway, after getting the right direction from one of the ladies who sit by the highway... (Was the day I took a break, to let my achilles tendon stop whinging.)

Cheers!

Thanks, Heather. I greatly appreciate whayever scribbles you have -- every little bit helps. No rush, because I don't think I'll get to this till after the holidays. I'm glad to see you are encouraging people to walk from Lisbon. That must mean that despite its negatives, the overall was a positive for you. How long do you think you'll last before you start planning the next Camino? :) Thanks again, Laurie

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Hi I will be walking this route from next May 5th so would just love to receive any up to date information

Haha! It will be two years before I can think about going back, Laurie. My niece will be graduating from university; I asked her if she wanted to walk the Camino with me so we'll do the French trail. For now I've got to kick into high gear and get my business back up to where it should be... I've got to contact the MDs and dentists and all my business neighbours to let them know I am accepting patient/clients. So, yeah, two years. I wonder that the Camino will be like then... :)

I'll try to get some info to you asap--I don't have any big plans for the holidays (will most likely be working)--if I take some time off, I'll dig into my journal to see what I can find you! I'll also contact Sheila and will forward your email address to her to see if she can give you any updates as well. She was better at keeping her journal up-to-date than I was!

And yes, despite the asphalt and flies, the far too many kms to walk over successive days, Portugal made a big impact on me. What a beautiful place and a grand place to walk the Camino!

Cheers from PEI!
Heather

I have now incorporated some fairly extensive comments on route, accommodations, and other helpful advice. Thanks so much to those of you who contributed. If anyone else has walked this route recently and would be willing to take a look at what I've got, I'd appreciate it. Or if any of you are walking soon, I will send you the word file. It will take a while for the CSJ to post the new version, I think.

Buen camino, Laurie

Hi Laurie, All my plans are in place to walk from Lisbon on the 31st March. Have you got any more up to date information on when the updated CSJ guide will be available?

Beun Camino, Judy.

Hi Kat,

I'm Starting from Santarem this Monday just for a week, any tips about the way? Did you do long stages of 30km per day ? Would you recommend places to stay? Would appreciate any help, it's my first try.

Best regards,
Irina

Just follow the yellow waymarkers.
On the Lisbon to Porto leg almost all distances are about 30 kms due to lack of places to stay in between. Earlier 2 or 3 days ago Amorfati and I (Albertinho) resumed all the places on the caminho we stayed
This is the thread.
Places I stayed May 2 - 28, 2014 on Caminho Portuguese - (w/ images part I)

We did not like the 30 kms distances
we skipped one day walk from Alverca do Ribatejo to Azambuja due to walking mostly all day along a busy road so took the train. But you are beyond that daywalk when you start in Santarèm. Sometimes we took the train or bus for 10 kms to reach in about 20 kms the next place to sleep. On the se ond leg from Porto to Santiago there is more oportunity to find a place to sleep within 20 km

Hi,

I noticed this thread is from last year... I finished this walk in early July, do you still need help with any revisions?

PM me if I can be of any assistance :)

Kat

Hi, Kat, you are right that the updated guide for 2014 is done and online. But I have recently issued a call to all spring/summer 2014 walkers to send me updates while things are fresh in their mind. They will be what I use early in 2015 to update the guide again.

If you didn't use the CSJ online guide, no problem, if you could take a look and see if things are in need of revision based on your experience, that would be great. There are two parts, one for Lisbon to Porto and one for Porto to Santiago. I did both last year, and if asked will be happy to do both again.

Thanks, and bom caminho, Laurie

Thank you Kat and Laurie! With All the recourses available I should be ok to find my way. Thank you!

Thanks Albertinho,

Its nice thread with good info about accommodations, recorded that. Is there need to prebook accommodations?

We did not. Sometimes we phoned in the morning that we arrived in the afternoon.
Specially do that if you want to stay at casa da Fernanda. Give her a call in the morning to be sure there is a place for you. The place is rather popular among pilgrims.

Bom caminho
