Location Indicator (?) for Smartphones

Time of past OR future Camino

Hello;

I am looking for an app for IOS and Android smartphones indicating whereabout of my fellow group members while on the trail. Any advise will be much appreciated.

A number of friends will walk on Camino Portugues next May. Among us, some are speed walkers, some are "snails", some are in between.

We would purchase SIM cards in Portugual (https://www.vodafone.pt/en/products-services/visiting-portugal.html) allowing us using WhatsApp to keep in touch with each other.

We are thinking to have an App which would show the locations of various members when walking on the trail.

I have looked at Personal Location Beacon (PLB), which is cost prohibited.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Many thanks,

DF

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
There's a similar feature on ViewRanger called Buddy Beacon. ViewRanger is a GPS mapping resource on which you can overlay the route you're taking. When you set up BB you give your friends a PIN number and they can see where you are - very reassuring for when your offspring are a long way away. Similarly your friends can set you up with a PIN and you'll be able to track them. Quite simple to set up.

“Find Friends “ on Iphone is easy and free. MapsMe is also great and free and a number of extra useful features.

Have a look at the "Alertcops" app provided free by the Spanish police. I think it is available for all kinds of phone, Android and iPhone. As well as being a very good way of contacting the police and other services it has a built-in "Guardian/Ward" facility where individuals can set themselves as guardians of several others, each of them can set themselves as guardians of all the others in return. A live map then shows the location of all the members in the party. I don't know if there is a limit to how many wards you can have, but it certainly showed my wife's location on my phone and hers on her phone when we used it on the Camino Frances this autumn.

But most importantly, the whole app is designed as an emergency contact system allowing you to easily Alert A Cop, and the other emergency services. a

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
