Lisbon Statistics

I had an email from someone who had our forum guide -- she was asking me about the numbers on the route from Lisbon. Wanting to tell her more than "oh the numbers are really increasing," I thought I'd do some hunting. I am really quite surprised.

From the Cathedral's office, here are the numbers who got compostelas leaving from Lisbon over the years:

2005 -- 57
2008 -- 357 (first time I walked)
2013 -- 1067
2015 -- 2059

To try to get a sense of what those numbers mean, I saw that the numbers starting from Lisbon in 2015 are about the same as started from Sevilla when I walked the Vdlp (2010) and more than three times those who started from Irun when I walked the Norte (2006). I always felt well accompanied when I walked those routes, so maybe we can now say that a walk from Lisbon is not likely to be lonely.

Almost a doubling in the past two years, looks like the snowball is rolling.
Bom caminho, Laurie

Ola amiga -
Am not surprised about the increase pilgrims leaving from Lisboa.
And please do keep in mind that this is 'just' the count from the Catedrale Se' in Lisboa.
Am wondering if this does include the count of pilgrims who get their Credential at the other church in Lisboa (It's a Basilica actually, in Chiado area) Just on the day when I obtained my credentials (end of April in 2014) there were approx 6 other pilgrims (including a family of 4 from Poland).
Thanks for sharing those stats ...

Hi, C,
Sorry, I may have misled you. These are the statistics from the Cathedral in Santiago, so it's a report of all those who got their compostelas in those years.

Of course it doesn't include the numbers who may not have gotten a compostela, who stopped before Santiago, etc, etc, but since all of the cathedral's compilations are subject to those same vagaries, I think they are good for rough comparisons.

Bom caminho! (and as a personal note, I DO have all your updates and will try to get to the revisions for the Lisbon guide soon, but I have just been swamped -- stay tuned).

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
