People can now light a candle over the internet or by SMS text message
An Andalucian company, Candeum Desarrollos, has completed the installation of virtual candles in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. Two screens show the candles which can be ‘lit’ over the internet from the webpage http://www.mivela.com or an SMS mobile text message at a cost of 1.39 € a time, IVA included.
The company says payment will ensure a virtual candle lights up for at least 11 minutes at peak times, while during off peak hours the candle will burn for as long as 31 minutes. At busy times a ‘waiting list’ will operate.
As the project expands the faithful will be able to choose the church where their virtual candle will be lit.
The Dean of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, José María Díaz, highlighted that with the new system there was no danger of fire, which was present with the traditional candles. He also said he expected more than half a million virtual candles to be lit each year, with the cathedral collecting a third of the money.
PS: Santiago Matamoros, chopping off the heads of the Chrysanthemums!!
