from SJPdP to Le Puy backwards and thinking of extending on to Geneva,
On the Geneva route this year, I met a young woman doing exactly that. She said she had no trouble following the waymarks eastbound. I would make sure to have the route-mapping set up on your smartphone, either with iPhiGenie or another app. The usual advice about walking in France also applies: mind the closing days, plan well ahead for lunch groceries, enlist the assistance of your host in calling ahead for reservations.

My limited experience is the GR red and white balise are applied for both directions.

Travelling east to west, the two sections I appreciated the least:
1 ) the descent from Rochegude
2) the descent from Aubrac to near Sainte-Come-d'Olt
These descents were both "awkward" and I recall thinking at the time that I would not be wanting to go up those paths.

For the route to Geneva you may care to review the writings of @KiwiNomad06 although she started from Geneva

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Again, soon as possible!
I can't see any problems walking Le Puy to Geneva. As stated above the waymarking on the GR routes are in both directions.

I do advise getting the 'Yellow Guide' for accommodation along this section. It also includes locals who will take in pilgrims.

Thanks for sharing. Yes we're aware of the joys of walking in France, having lived there for some years and walked Paris to SJPdP via Vezelay, that's what we like about France :)

Thanks Alwyn, we actually prefer the ascents to descents where it certainly can be awkward ;) We'll check in on KiwiNomad's writings thanks.

Cheers, Janette

Hi Everyone, we're planning on walking from SJPdP to Le Puy backwards and thinking of extending on to Geneva, has anyone done that? Any advice and tips highly appreciated, thanks.
So here's an update from us! Like many we were grounded in 2020 so could not travel. However, we are now back on track to arrive in Paris April 2023 and spend 3 months walking 3 caminos in 3 countries! This time we plan to start our walk from Geneva to SJPdP via Le Puy, then onto the Francès and branch off onto the Aragonès. Possibly continue along the Voie d'Arles towards Montpellier depending on time. Love to hear from anyone with updates etc on the areas we'll be in, especially Geneva to Le Puy and any of the variants Le Puy to SJPdP.

You really are tigers for punishment!

The round trip Geneva to Montpellier would be more than 3,000 km?

A friend staying in Leuven a dozen years ago, and about to set off to Compostela a month later, sent me a photo looking down at a footpath near her lodgings of a bronze shell and a stone with "2,500 km" and an arrow pointing south-west.

And your trip is just for the fun and enjoyment of it.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
