Le Puy to Conques, sleeping bag /bed bugs

Hi everyone

Has anyone experienced bed bugs staying in hostels between Le Puy-en-Velay and Conques. Not a pleasant topic but having had the experience, I hope not to have it repeated. Also, is it advisable to take a sleeping bag. I found it helpful on Camino
Frances.

There isn´t an albergue or hotel in the world that hasn´t had bedbugs at some stage in its history. Any establishment that discovers it has them will get rid of them very, very quickly so any report of bedbugs in a given place will be well out of date by now. I would relax and enjoy the walk.

Most of the accommodations are gites, hostels and hotels. I think you will find a sleeping bag redundant. Bed bugs can happen anywhere, any time but I did not encountered any or hear any reports about them on the Via Podiensis.

Lucky you! On our second night at a farmhouse in Sauges in 2018, we woke the next morning to find unwelcome extra occupants in our beds. I lifted the fitted sheet and found whole colonies in several corners.
I discretely told madam, who did not sound in the slightest bit surprised or worried by my discovery.

In my experience walking the GR65 from Le Puy to Conques in May this year, I found they were taking the problem of bed bugs seriously. In most places you can't take your rucksack into the dormitory - instead, you put the belongings you need in a plastic box, and your rucksack stays downstairs in a locker or on a rack. That doesn't eliminate the problem, but it helps. At Conques Abbey, you have to put your bag in a fumigated plastic sack. I never needed a sleeping bag - I just used a sleeping liner and the blanket provided. The undersheet is also provided.

This has been my experience also, I walked this route twice and never had a problem with bedbugs. Also, I only carry a silk sleep sac which is extremely lightweight. It’s always been enough, even in chilly April.
