I have a friend joining me on my Portugués Camino in September. She intends to join me in Porrino to start walking. Will she be entitled to a Compostela with enough distance (100km)? I have seen conflicting things that some say Porrino is the last place to qualify and others say it needs to be Tui. Will Porrino qualify ??

We've had a similar discussion only a few days ago.

A starting point qualifies for a Compostela when the Oficina del Peregrino recognises it as such.

The ""actual"" distance in km that one can see in guidebooks, Camino apps and even on waymarkers is best ignored.

The best way to check is going to the registration page for Compostelas: https://oficinadelperegrino.com/registro-individual/

Porriño is on the list of starting points for the Portuguese Way and qualifies for a Compostela:

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
And,…. Don’t forget to get your two stamps per day from there on….

I have noticed this year a new practice of people starting from the very last distance waymarker prior to the 100K one. Photographing themselves next to it as evidence.

That is not pilgrimage, it's box-ticking. As is the current pre-registration system.

We are pilgrims, not mass production items in some pseudo-mystical assembly line.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Perfect memento/gift in a presentation box. Engraving available, 25 character max.

But does noticing, and constantly pointing out the shortcomings of others, in some kind of aloof and misguided belief that we are setting ourselves apart on some imagined higher plane, make us better pilgrims? I think not. If we really are true pilgrims, shouldn't we concern ourselves less with the deeds of others and more with rejoicing in our common purpose?

Bucket listing would be my expression
Even if your motive is 100% religious, isn’t walking the Camino to see the tomb of St. James still a “bucket list” experience? That is, something that you very much want to do before you die? Indeed, isn’t making any pilgrimage a quintessential “bucket list” thing?

Ok, so this is the first I have heard of pre-registration. But I have only been on here a few days but…Would you please explain. Thank you!

Others than I might do that better.

Slightly off track I know but I walked this year for someone else, and found the pre-registration process doesn't allow for this at all. I had learned about the process for 'in vicarie pro' from this forum.
So once I reached the pilgrim office, I had to find people who knew how to facilitate that, as the pre-registration contained only my name. It took 3 people to sort it out for me, as none of the staff I met had encountered a pilgrim walking on another's behalf this year.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

Since Jabba declined answering I can only guess, but I believe it is the process by which you can preregister online for your Compostela, even before you start walking. https://oficinadelperegrino.com/en/sigle-register/

All potential pilgrims must pre-register with Sts Peter, Paul and Mary and be able to sing the entire lyric of “Puff the Magic Dragon”. Or, pre- register on the Pilgrims Office website to expedite their claim for a Compostela.

Neither of these statements are entirely inaccurate
