Camino Primitivo: Summer 2025
Hola Peregrinos!

Somehow, a few months ago, the Camino bug bit me.

Honestly, I don’t even know where it came from. I’ve known people who have done the Camino, and just in the last few months. I’ve started to think that I want to join this weird and wonderful community.

So after many months of research, and obsessing over backpack size, and reading so much on this forum, and watching an unfortunate number of YouTube packing videos, and giving REI a lot of my money … I’ve finally made the commitment.

I will walk the Camino Primitivo in July, as that is the time when I can take a few weeks off. Maybe that’s a weird first Camino? But I think if I ever do the Francés, I want to do the whole thing. And I know I can’t take five weeks right now. And the Primitivo seems just so lovely…

I’ll be traveling solo, and I’m excited about the opportunity to connect with other people, and also have lots of alone time.

Thank you all for the wisdom that you have shared in this forum.

I’m excited to spend the next six months, preparing my body and spirit for this journey.

Paz y bien,
Betsy

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Fail to prepare? reduce your risk by buying this book full of practical info.

So happy to see this! There have been posts in the past with members issuing warnings about how the Primitivo is not a good “first camino.” I have always disagreed with that, and in fact on my last Primitivo, I paid attention and learned that it was the “first camino” for a lot of the people I met.

It’s a great choice — it’s got a real “camino feel,” (whatever that may be), the scenery is great, there are a lot of nice towns, the infrastructure is pretty plentiful, and you will have company if you want it but can walk alone if you prefer.

The only place where I would pay attention to accommodation is in Berducedo - it’s kind of a bottleneck and I would reserve there ahead of time. The municipal albergue in Grado is frequently full early in the day, but there are plenty of other places to stay in Grado.

Buen camino, @Betsybow !

Thanks for the encouragement and a few practical tips. I can see how people get to Berducedo and are ready to be DONE for the day!

3rd Edition. Vital content training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
I think the Primitivo is an excellent choice for all the reasons P2K said. I would most strongly recommend the Hostal A Pocina de Muniz in Ferreira. Probably the best place I have stayed in in all my caminos. 20 euros for bunk beds 60 if you want private and posh! https://www.apocinademuniz.es/
