The 53rd Semana de Musica Antigua de Estella returns this year after a forced two-year break because of the pandemic It runs from the 3- 10 September with a wonderful programme of concerts by noted musicians and singers in various historic buildings in this beautiful town. As some forum members might know, I am a great fan of the the Catalonian viola de gamba player and fosterer of international musical collaborations, Jordi Savall. He will be performing with Xavier Diaz-Latorre at Eglesia de San Miguel on 7 September, 19.00. Tickets are 12 euros. To book or see the whole programme for any pilgrims passing through on these dates follow the link: www.smade.es

After walking part of the Vasco Camino in 2019 I travelled down to Estella from Vitoria Gasteiz by bus - a stunning journey - to meet a peregrina friend who was walking the Frances and to see Jordi Savall & Pedro Estevan in San Miguel. It is a fine church with excellent acoustics and provides an intimate setting for a concert, and just around the corner is an excellent bar serving first class pinxtos & impressive Navarran vino tinto. Salud & buen Camino!

I have a very large collection of Jordi Savall and Hesperion works in my record collection. One of the best gifts my daughters ever gave to me was CD of Gaspar Sanz works by Diaz La Torre and Pedro Estaban. I have never managed to see any of their live performances, but would make a detour to see them live if I had the chance.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Wow, that sounds wonderful. And what a setting! I love the Savall family's brilliant music-making. Many years ago, my partner gave me 'Lux Feminae' by the late, great Monserrat Figueras, and I have been hooked ever since. Hope those who go to Jordi Savall's concert in Estella have a wonderful time

As a big fan of both the city of Estella and of sacred music of the baroque period performed on instruments of the time I highly highly recommend the opportunity to hear Jordi Savall live in concert in one of these acoustically wonderful churches! It’s sure to add greatly to your Camino experience!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Now that I am aware of this, next year (assuming all is more or less well in the world) I am going to do my annual expedition so that I can attend. Many thanks for sharing.

I do not know if it was this festival I encountered in Estella on my first Camino, but it was an extraordinary experience to stagger in off the trail and buy a ticket from a table which exclaimed their pleasure at having a pilgrim attend. Estella has always retained a place in my memory.

David Russell, The Glaswegian Classical Guitarist has an excellent video on Youtube performing in three churches along the Camino: Villalcázar de Sirga, Carrion de los Condes and Fromista

One of the most beautiful and haunting things I have ever heard is Savall’s wife Arianna singing the Salve Regina in Spanish - “La Salve”.
