Many thanks Bilbao it is.The bus from Bilbao to Logrono takes barely 2 hours.
The airport shuttle bus goes directly to Bilbao bus station. You can buy your bus ticket to Logrono at the La Union kiosk. There's a reasonable bar there (serving remarkably pleasant vino tinto), also luggage storage.
When I did this a couple of months ago, I was in Logrono by 3pm.

Nobody has mentioned rowing in a curragh, and you could land in any port you like.
