Muxía (A Coruña) asks to avoid drinking tap water after more than 40 cases of gastroenteritis
Although the first parameters analysed are "normal", they are waiting for conclusive results to determine whether they are related to the water or a virus.
The town council of Muxía (A Coruña) has asked people to "avoid" drinking water from the taps after more than 40 cases were detected among residents with symptoms of gastroenteritis, while awaiting the conclusive results of the analyses underway to determine whether they are related to the water or whether it could be a virus "with a high load".
This was explained, in statements to Europa Press, by the mayor of Muxía, the socialist Iago Toba, who said that at around 7:00 on Thursday he began to receive many calls from neighbours "who were feeling unwell", which is why they suspected that "it could be from the water supply".
This was the first hypothesis as there were "quite a large number of cases in children and adults" in various areas of the municipality. However, as the first analyses of the water have been "normal", with "such a large number of people affected", the mayor has commissioned a specialised company to carry out a more complete analysis, the conclusive results of which are expected "for the morning" of this Friday.
For the moment, the mayor of Muxía has insisted that he can neither "confirm nor deny" that these cases of gastroenteritis symptoms are related to the consumption of water from the mains, as "not all" of those affected have ingested it.
So far, the results of the first analyses "did not show any anomaly", according to the Town Council of this municipality, "and were normal within the parameters of potability" after analysing the different supply tanks of the municipality.
Origin
They are therefore working to determine the "origin" of these cases. In addition, the councillor explained that he has contacted the management of the Virxe da Xunqueira Hospital in Cee, to which patients in the area are referred, as well as the Department of Health, which has sent staff from Epidemiology to carry out a parallel study of the water.
"It may be a virus with a very high load," said the mayor of this town in relation to the possible origin of the cases of gastroenteritis, because "there are entire families" affected. All in all, he has insisted on waiting for the results of the analyses.
