Del Norte (2019) - postponed due to injury
Frances - 200km (2017)
Hi all - I start walking from Irun today and was hoping to pick up a pair of cheap hiking poles that I can leave behind/donate at Santiago, however they're a minimum 30 euros at the local sports store here.

I picked up a pair for half this price at pilgrim shops on the Frances. Has anyone seen cheaper poles available on the del Norte?

I thought there might've been pilgrim supplies stores at Irun similar to St Jean Pied de Port, but i guess it's a less travelled route 😊

Thanks in advance
Kylie

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hi Kylie, there's a Decathlon in San Sebastian (two in fact, but you'll want to go to the "Decathlon City" in the centre, as the other one's quite far away).

The "City" stores are normally smaller, but they'll definitely have some basic poles in stock. If you want to check before getting there, go to their Spanish website (decathlon.es), and do a search for "baston". Click on the ones you like, choose the size ("talla") if necessary, and then go to "Compra y recoge en 1 hora". A search block will come up, where you write San Sebastian, and it will tell you whether there are any currently in stock in that particular store.

(Just did a search for you, and they seem to have a few varieties in stock in San Sebastian. Basic ones for €5.99, €14.99, and then more expensive).

Hi, I walked the Norte last year and the Decathlon was the only store that had walking poles in the center of the city. I think there was at least one if not two other outdoor stores but they did not have poles. I bought a pretty cheap pair of sticks. They did not have a very large selection at all. In fact they just had a few poles. As Jan said there is a store out of town that is supposed to be much larger. The poles I bought worked fine and I think I paid about 30 or 35 euros. I also checked online when I went and what they said was in stock was not in stock at the store. Dont forget to go to Gelateria Boulevard for the most delicious ice cream on earth.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

Awesome thanks so much Jan - I'll check out Decathlon - those prices sound better too 😃

Ok no worries thanks for the advice. And some gelato sounds perfect - even on these rainy days 😃

Their ice cream is even better. You will be in heaven. Love to know what you think if you can get there.

Best dark chocolate and pistachio icecream I've ever had! 🤩 👍 thanks!
