Going Commando?

Milkweed

New Member
This is maybe too much information (dios mio, this is DEFINITELY too much information), but I haven't bothered with underpants for a couple years now. I'm female. They just seem totally superfluous and not the most comfortable thing in the world. To me.

But I'm wondering if they're necessary on Camino?
Anyone have experience going without?
Other underpants-y insights?

Thanks!
Margaret

Not being a woman I cannot comment on what is comfortable or needed, but considering what many younger ladies wear as an undergarment I could not imagine anything more uncomfortable than hiking with dental floss as an undergarment.

I can't think of any issues you may have on the Camino. It's one less thing you have to worry about washing! I usually wear boy-cut underwear, but because they were cotton, I switched to a high-cut synthetic brief and those worked quite well. I didn't spend the money on the ExOfficio undies, just went with Hanes. As long as they are synthetic, they will dry just fine.

So, I guess I am saying you will be fine....just my two cents.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Well, I don't like underpants either, but I wore them on the Camino.
For one thing, you are going to SWEAT while walking, which will lead to CHAFING with skin on skin. Something absorbent might be more comfortable.

The other issue is that it could make undressing for bed an issue. Often, people change clothes right beside their bed in the albergue and while you may not be embarrassed at your bare tail, it could cause discomfort among fellow pilgrims who aren't as progressive

Lastly, if you DO decide to go bare, you can always buy panties along the way. But they're so lightweight, it seems silly to go without them, to me.

I had running shorts made with built in undies (like the men's shorts).
I also took two pairs of bikini pants - to wear with the long trousers - and bikini tops (instead of bra) just in case there was somewhere to have a swim. Came in useful at Boadilla and at Fistera.
