hi
i am going to do the part from Leon to the Compostella on October. someone can recommend on winter gear which is needed? from past experience how much rainy is it?

I walked end October to mid December from SJPdP to Fisterra.

You don't need any winter gear.

I wore 100 weight fleece and a scarf draped over shoulders on frosty mornings. Wool gloves whenever it rained. If it was cold and windy I wore my rain coat too. I wore 300 weight fleece on top of the 100 during evenings.

I had two days all day rain and several days with light on-an- off sprinkles. In Galicia it often squalled with heavy soaking rains that lasted 15 minutes.

I have walked that stretch in October and November. I took light gloves, a light stocking cap, a balaclava, a fleece and a rain jacket. In the early mornings (before the sun was up) I found it necessary to wear the gloves, cap and fleece. After a while, the gloves came off. By mid-morning, the cap and fleece were gone. On a few nasty days, I wore the balaclava to protect my face as I walked into the wind.

I never was really cold while walking in the mornings, but found that stopping outdoors for more than a couple of minutes was not a good idea for me. I quickly lost body temperature just standing around taking a break. So I tried to utilize every café and church along the way so I could get out of the elements when I needed a breather.

In October, you need to be prepared for almost the same range of conditions as you do for most of the year, but it is not "winter". You could have a wonderful warm autumn or you could have some nasty weather. You need to be prepared for rain as well as early morning temperatures getting down close to freezing. A hat, buff and gloves are useful for controlling temperature without you having to stop and take off layers. You might be walking in a t-shirt in the afternoons. Your rain gear can be worn to insulate against wind and cold. You need to keep one warm layer dry for the evening and night, and you should have a sleeping bag. Mine is rated for 7C.

Several thin layers are much more versatile than one or two heavier layers.

You can still do this with no more than 7 kg.

I also want to add that cold/winter is something very subjective depending on where you are from. F.e. for somebody from Alaska October/November on the Camino Frances might seem to be spring weather, for somebody from Brazil it will seem like deepest winter ;-)

Good rain gear is necessary but how warm your layers have to be, only you can decide.
