Walking the Camino del Norte September and October, 2015, my boots filled with water from the driving rain soaking through my pants and running down my legs into my boots, thus my need for effective gaiters.

Any recommendations ?

I did briefly talk with a German girl who said her knee high light weight gaiters that zipped up from the back kept her socks and boots from getting wet from the rain , but she only had the german name for them which I couldn't remember. I did notice that on the back of her gaiters, the letters SAV. Again, any help?

Anyway many good gaiters on the market whichever brand you choose. No real high-tech stuff needed for any Camino including winter one.

They will, if they reach over the tops of your shoes/boots. Actually that is the method I use most often, very long rain pants/trousers that go down to my ankles. Buen Camino, SY

I have a pair of rain pants, but I found them to heavy to pack. Also, I would prefer to walk in the rain with the bottoms off my convertible pants, as long as I could keep the rain from running down my legs and into my boots. Even in late October, it wasn't cold enough to be uncomfortable in terms of temperature.

Get the lightweight ones and slightly long, wear them over the tops of your boots as SY says. I have done this for years and it works for me.

I agree, rain pants is probably the only things that will truly stop what your are discussing...because the rain can also drip down into the top of the gaiters if you are wearing them directly against your legs with bottoms off of your cutoff pants. Generally most gaiters are designed to be worn in conjunction with snow pants.

There is an unfortunate hard truth in outdoor clothing that 'breathable' and 'waterproof' cannot be found together, despite that a manufacturer may suggest in advertising. We can send people to the moon but can't figure that one out

There are also overshoes and waterproof socks (Sealskinz). Or sandals and ignore the water. I wade through it, rinse the mud off at the first water trough.

My rainpants weighed less than a single gaiter. If you really don't want to wear them as pants then you could make your own gaiters. Cut the pants off above your knee, when they are covering your boots, then hem them and insert elastic so that they fit comfortably either above or below your knee. Just a suggestion.

And you can still use the rest of the pants as short pants

Thights and gaiters is the way to go, let me explain, thights absorbs water creating a tin film of water between your legs and the material therefore keeping your legs warm and water just don't pour down your legs, now for the gaiters I put my socks over the thights and a short gaiter over that and works great, but again I hike with an umbrella and can't beat that

In wet weather I use lightweight Berghaus Paclite Goretex overtrousers which only weigh 200g and a pair of Outdoor Research short gaiters which weigh 218g.

This combination means the rain never runs into my boots. The overtrousers can also be used as an extra layer in colder weather.
