Thanks for your help Sio Camino, much appreciate.WordReference is excellent - the app is very good and the online forum is good for phrases and colloquialisms.
I favour the deepl translator (www.deepl.com) over google (much better for translate the meaning of a sentence rather than word for word) but that website doesn’t have an app as far as I know.
Hope this is of help.

It’s not perfect, but ok. When I’ve used it to help me doing my ‘Duolingo’ lessons ., I find that ‘itranslate ‘ and ‘google translate ‘ sometimes differ as there is never a real ‘right way ‘ to express some thoughts. Even English speakers choose different words or grammar.
But itranslate is a good start. You do need internet though.
It will be interesting to follow here to see what you end up with.
Thanks for your help MikeJS,much appreciateI now use Say Hi- translates most languages to each other using voice or typing.
I didn’t realise that there were translate apps for free, for a while it was costing me $25.00 a month CheersYou're welcome. As you can see, there is no shortage of good translation tools to choose from. I'm sure you'll be covered for any eventuality. . . except a drained battery.
